Ohio winters are brutal on boats. Freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and wind can cause severe damage to your hull, engine, systems, and interior if your boat isn't properly prepared for hibernation. From cracked blocks and corroded metal to frozen plumbing and ruined batteries, winter damage is costly and often preventable.
At Terry's Marine Service, we understand the unique challenges Lake Erie boaters face. For over 13 years, we've been helping Marblehead's boat owners protect their most valuable assets with comprehensive winterization services and secure storage solutions. Frequently Asked Questions
When should I winterize my boat?
Ideally, winterize before the first freeze. For Ohio and Lake Erie, that typically means September through early November. The earlier you winterize, the more protected your boat is if an early freeze hits. We recommend scheduling by October to ensure your spot before the rush.
What's included in a full winterization?
Our full winterization covers engine winterization (all types), fuel system stabilization, cooling system antifreeze flush, battery disconnect and conditioning, bilge and livewell drainage, water system blowout, gear lube change, and interior moisture protection. We customize the package based on your boat type and systems.
How is storage pricing calculated?
Storage rates are based on your boat's overall length and beam. Both indoor heated storage and outdoor shrink wrap storage are priced this way. Contact us with your boat's dimensions for an exact quote. We'll also discuss seasonal discounts and multi-year storage rates.
Can I access my boat during winter storage?
Yes. For indoor heated storage, accessing your boat is straightforward. For outdoor shrink wrap storage, we can arrange access with advance notice—just let us know what you need. We want to make sure your boat is cared for but understand you may need to retrieve items or check on things.
What does spring commissioning include?
Spring commissioning reverses the winterization process. We de-winterize your engine, test all systems, recharge batteries, conduct a full inspection, perform a sea trial, and provide launch support. You'll launch with confidence that everything has been professionally checked and tested.
Do you offer haul-out and transport services?
Yes. For outdoor shrink wrap storage, haul-out and transport are included in your storage rate. For boats that need to be transported to our facility, we can arrange that as well. Contact us to discuss your boat's specific needs and location.
